On! surfboards: the Quad Fish wins!

A few weeks ago I blogged about the mini quiver I made myself for early summer, consisting of an Eps/Epoxy short board and a 6' quad fish. I thought that I'd give some follow up on the boards. The Eps/Epoxy short board was great. Light responsive and versatile. I found that this board shaped to the same dimensions as my polyester short board, worked in all conditions. I had glassed this board extremely light as an experiment to see just how light I could go on a short board. Well... I guess it was too light. As you can see in the picture I broke it on a head high low tide session. The Quad fish is another new favorite. Not as controllable as a normal short board this fish is fast and loose. Surprisingly versatile in both hollow and mushy conditions this fish with a deep concave through the tail almost feels turbo charged as I'm going down the line. I'll be making a new Epoxy board as soon as I can get a blank and in the meanwhile I'm surfing the quad fish everyday.

What does the shaper ride?

In case you where wondering what the shaper rides, check out the mini quiver I made myself to kick off the California summer. I've shaped a 6'3" EPS/Epoxy. This board is light and has the added buoyancy of an epoxy board which will help in small gutless conditions. This is a performance shortboard that will also perform in better conditions. I've also shaped a quad fish. The quad fish is specifically designed for small conditions. At 6' with a width of 20 1/2" and 2 1/2" thick , and a flatter fish rocker this board will catch waves easy in weak conditions and have the looseness of a quad. Summer is almost here so get out there and enjoy it!

Nomad surf tours west Java.

My friend Todd Roesler, owner operator of The Nomad, just sent me these pictures. The pictures were taken at the end of last season(sometime in November.) Chris Mclaughlin is On!

Props to On! rider Chris Mclaughlin for making the final of the men's division, this weekend in the Surfside Sports contest. The contest was held this weekend at 54th street in Newport beach, in marginal conditions. Chris did what he could in windy 1 to 2 foot surf, and made the final, in conditions that I wouldn't even wish on my enemy. Good job Chris! I also want to give props to On! rider Joe Frizzelle who surfed in a heat yesterday but didn't advance. Good effort all the same. Thanks to both of those guys for supporting our cause!

Happy first day of spring!

Its the first day of spring so I just wanted to do back flips today! It was an insane clear warm windless day here In orange county. Feel sorry for that poor guy that stepped on a stingray this morning near orange street in Newport Beach though... He couldn't even walk, an ambulance had to come and take him away.

Flat conditions and Flourescent colors.

The surf was flat today. Or at least what I would call flat. I was going to blog about how every one needs a Fish or Longboard for days like today, so I guess that I just did that. My friend Alex Krastev who is a boy's designer at Quicksilver sent me a picture of the board I just made for him. We've all heard that fluorescent colors have made a come back, I guess Alex's artwork is proof of that. Nice work Alex, Throw some big turns on that thing!
